Day 08

The upstairs neighbors are awfully noisy. I told my landlord, but he said it’s been vacant for months.

Noisy

Zachariah Michaelson loved his new apartment.

It was the first floor of an old two-story home that had been converted into separate units. There was a fire escape out back and a big set of stairs on the side that led to the second floor apartment, but that unit had been vacant since Zachariah moved in three months ago. He finally had a big kitchen to cook in, built-in shelves for his books, and a bathtub large enough for a small army.

It was private, quiet, and absolutely perfect.

At least, it had been up until a week ago.

That was when Zachariah started hearing strange noises from the upstairs apartment.

Sometimes it was crashing or distant laughter, the water running for an extended period of time, and the definite sound of splashing.

He understood that some noise was going to happen.

People had to live. They were inevitably going to drop things or need to take long showers, but this was getting ridiculous. It honestly sounded like his new neighbors were banging pots and pans around in the middle of the night, and the splashing made Zachariah think they had a swimming pool up there. He was honestly concerned they’d put in one of those inflatable pools that was destined to pop and flood down in his apartment.

He might wake up one day to find a giant pool on his kitchen island.

While annoying, none of this was truly disturbing until he called the landlord to voice his concerns and complain about his new, noisy neighbors. His landlord had laughed it off as the house settling and told him that the last couple who had lived there moved out over six months ago.

The apartment was vacant.

Well, shit.

Zachariah tried to convince himself it was the house as his landlord had said, but he definitely heard splashing again later that evening as he was watching television and waiting for his lasagna to bake. It was coming from upstairs, and he scowled, gulping down his wine.

“Fuck this,” Zachariah mumbled. “A house settling doesn’t sound like someone going down a slip and slide.”

There was a door that led upstairs right beside his kitchen, but it was locked. He stormed outside to try the outside stairs, but no one answered when he knocked. It was also locked. He went back down and then headed to the fire escape, grimacing at how it squeaked as he climbed up.

He’d heard this sound before, and he realized now that someone was probably squatting in the other apartment.

And apparently taking a lot of baths or whatever the hell they were doing.

When Zachariah reached the top of the fire escape, the window was wide open. He ducked his head inside, spying the glow of a light coming from the kitchen.

There was definitely someone here.

“Here, now just hold still,” a young male voice said as water sloshed around. “Please try not to splash me, okay? You know how much I hate that.
